Bipasha Basu
Bipasha Basu (born January 7, 1979) is an Indian actress, former fashion model, and fitness enthusiast who has predominantly worked in Hindi cinema, alongside appearances in Telugu, Tamil, Bengali, and English films. Born in New Delhi and raised in Kolkata, West Bengal, she initially pursued a highly successful career as a fashion model after winning the Godrej Cinthol Supermodel contest in 1996. After turning down early film offers, she made her acting debut portraying a negative character in Abbas-Mustan's suspense thriller *Ajnabee* (2001). Her performance won her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. In 2002, Basu achieved massive mainstream success and firmly established her status as a leading lady and national sex symbol with her breakthrough role in Vikram Bhatt's blockbuster horror film *Raaz*, earning a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Actress. That same year, she made her Telugu cinema debut opposite Mahesh Babu in the western action film *Takkari Donga*. Breaking away from conventional Bollywood heroine tropes, she garnered immense critical acclaim playing a seductive murderess in the erotic thriller *Jism* (2003), securing a Filmfare nomination for Best Villain. Throughout the 2000s, Basu became one of the highest-paid and most sought-after actresses in the industry, delivering major commercial blockbusters such as the ensemble comedies *No Entry* (2005) and *Phir Hera Pheri* (2006), the action-thriller *Dhoom 2* (2006), and the stylish suspense thriller *Race* (2008). She concurrently proved her dramatic mettle, earning widespread critical praise and awards recognition for her roles as a determined corporate executive in Madhur Bhandarkar's *Corporate* (2006) and as the village belle Billo Chamanbahar in Vishal Bhardwaj's acclaimed Shakespearean adaptation *Omkara* (2006). Moving into the 2010s, Basu reinvented herself as the definitive "Queen of Horror" in Indian cinema, headlining a string of successful supernatural thrillers including *Raaz 3* (2012), *Aatma* (2013), *Creature 3D* (2014), and *Alone* (2015). Following her marriage to actor Karan Singh Grover in 2016, Basu consciously took a step back from mainstream theatrical films to focus on her personal life and wellness ventures. She subsequently made her digital streaming debut starring alongside her husband in the crime thriller web series *Dangerous* (2020). Since then, she has been on an extended acting sabbatical, welcoming her daughter in 2022. While she currently has no official film releases slated for 2025 or 2026, she remains highly active as a celebrity influencer, fitness advocate, and entrepreneur. With a legacy marked by trailblazing character choices and breaking stereotypes in Hindi cinema, Basu continues to be celebrated as an iconic figure in the industry.
