After World War II, the Krnรกฤ family moved from central Slovakia to western Ukraine. After the controversial annexation of that region to the Soviet Union, they found themselves trapped with no way out, as Nikita Khrushchev's decree forced them to settle in the village of Belgarka in the Kazakh steppe, where they spent more than forty years.
